The Beginning of Gothic Architecture
The kings of France, living in Paris, conquered southern France in the late 1100s to the early 1200s AD. They used the tax money from southern France to build many churches in Paris. In southern France the people were building churches in the Romanesque style. However, architects building churches in Paris wanted a new style, which they called Gothic.
